From the bustling streets of Kathmandu to the sacred sites of Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, our carefully curated itinerary promises a journey of self-discovery and spiritual renewal. Guided by experienced practitioners, you'll have the chance to engage in meaningful encounters with local communities, participate in traditional rituals, and deepen your understanding of Buddhist philosophy.

Our Guides

Kathleen Willis Morton, an MFA graduate from the University of New Orleans, and co-founder of DAWAFields, seamlessly weaves her Buddhist practice into her narrative craft. Kathleen draws from her spiritual beliefs and personal journey to create stories that resonate profoundly with readers.

Beyond her literary pursuits, Kathleen serves as the Chaplain Development Advisor for the Office of Ministry Studies at Harvard Divinity School. Her book, "The Blue Poppy and the Mustard Seed," offers a poignant exploration of universal themes such as love and loss. Through her intimate storytelling, Kathleen provides solace and inspiration to readers navigating similar challenges, reflecting the enduring resilience of the human spirit.

Katherine Demsky, anthropologist and Buddhist practitioner residing in Nepal for over a decade, is the founder and director of Upaya Consulting. Through this organization, she passionately champions women's empowerment, establishing educational and economic pathways. Since 2015, Katherine has led inspiring journeys across Southeast Asia for groups committed to social and spiritual consciousness.

As a spiritual innovator, she seamlessly integrates academic expertise, community engagement, and Buddhist principles to foster deep connections and bridge cultural understanding and empowerment within the communities she serves.

Pricing

9 days/8 nights

Pricing for the retreat is yet to be determined, but anticipate rates ranging between $2,800 and $3,400 USD for shared rooms. Additionally, there's an option for a single room at an additional cost of $300.

Our Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

- Arrive in Kathmandu, Nepal.

- Transfer to Patan, home of the indigenous Newari people.

- Check into your accommodations and rest after your journey.

- Optional evening exploration of Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site showcasing Newari architecture.

Day 2: Sacred Sites in Kathmandu

- Explore the spiritual ambiance of Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple.

- Visit a women's school to learn about Nepali culture and the educational journey of local women. Take some time to journal about the stories you hear.

- Visit sacred Buddhist sites in Kathmandu. 

- Enjoy an evening of relaxation and reflection at your guesthouse in Patan.

Day 3: Cultural Immersion in Patan

- Explore Patan's rich cultural heritage, including a dive into Newari Tantric Buddhism 

- Visit a Newari woodworker family to witness traditional craftsmanship and try some crafting for yourself.

- Experience traditional singing bowl therapy by a local family involved in the trade for generations.

- Enjoy an evening of relaxation and reflection at your guesthouse in Patan.

Day 4: Journey to Lumbini

- Fly to Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, located in the Rupandehi District of Nepal.

- Visit Maya Devi Temple, the sacred site marking the birth of Siddhartha Gautama. Take some time to meditate, journal and reflect on the significance of this sacred feminine space.

- Explore Ramagrama and other Buddhist sites in and around Lumbini.

Day 5: Full Day in Lumbini

- Participate in traditional kirtan and meditation at a local village family farm.

- Engage in discussions about Buddhism and its relevance in modern society. Journal your thoughts and insights.

- Walk through the Sacred Garden Area visiting several of the 80+ monasteries that line the grand canal of Lumbini. 

- Enjoy a traditional Nepali meal.

- Spend the evening reflecting on the day's experiences.

Day 6:  Exploring Kapilavastu

- Transfer to Kapilavastu, where Buddha spent his early years, and immerse yourself in the serene surroundings.

- Continue exploration of Kapilavastu and its surroundings.

- Engage in discussions about Buddhism and its relevance in modern society. Journal your thoughts and insights.

- Spend the evening reflecting on the day's experiences.

Day 7: Return to Kathmandu

- Travel back to Kathmandu from Lumbini.

- Check into your accommodations in the Boudha area.

- Enjoy free time for shopping and exploring the vibrant khora.

- Attend an optional evening prayer ceremony at Boudhanath Stupa.

Day 8: Final Day in Kathmandu

- Optional walking tour of the ancient trading center of Kathmandu.

- Take part in a closing ceremony to reflect on our journey and experiences.

- Enjoy a farewell dinner in the evening with fellow participants.

Day 9: Departure from Kathmandu

- Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure.

- Bid farewell to Nepal, carrying with you the memories and insights gained during your pilgrimage.
